“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
The world’s most elegant woman, Coco Chanel, was said to have given that advice to follow when dressing with accessories.
Now, I know what you're thinking...what does this have to do with furniture finishes?
Well, let me tell you.
I know how to do a lot of cool finishes and I know of some great products and techniques. I know that transfers, decoupage, new knobs, gold leaf, salt wash, guilders paste, crackler, etc. are amazing products that do amazing things for furniture.
I also know something else...
I know that less is more.
Coco Chanel may have been talking about accessories like bracelets, earrings, and necklaces - after all, this was a woman who loved her accessories - but she also knew that it’s way too easy to get carried away when you have a lot to choose from.
Several months ago, we had a customer show us photos of a piece she just finished. It had 2 different colors, it had decoupage and it had 2 different types of knobs.
After she left I said to Paul, I think that Coco Chanel quote can be applied to what we do.
The piece seemed a little over the top…like it could’ve used one less thing.
So, I challenge you to think twice the next time you decide to work on a piece of furniture and you want to throw everything you have at your disposal at it. In fact, take a good hard look at pieces you have now that aren’t selling. See if there is a way to simplify, to take just one thing away.
