500 million users.
That’s how many users Instagram has around the globe and it has become the go-to platform for visual storytellers.
Why is this important to you as a furniture painter?
Because, my friend, selling furniture is a visual business.

Well, here we go...
A few quick numbers
I’m not sure about you, but I know my customer is women age 30-49 who make $50-$75 who live in the city or suburbs.
Well, how about that...my customer is on Instagram.
But do Instagram users really notice, much less make a buying decision, based upon something they see on their feed?
You bet they do.
Let me tell you about Jinxed
Jinxed is a small vintage furniture and home décor consignment store with a couple of locations in Philadelphia. The first time Paul and I walked into one of their stores, we heard the two employees working on the wording for an Instagram post of a large buck head that was hanging on the wall right over my head. It took us about 20-30 minutes to walk around their tiny shop looking at everything and finally picking out a chair, sewing table and a couple of small décor items.
We brought our things to the counter and waited for the girl at the register to finish ringing a phone order. As she recapped the order before processing the credit card, we realized that the item being purchased was the same buck head she just listed less than 30 minutes ago!
When she hung up the phone we commented on how fast the item sold. The clerk told us that they have over 40 thousand Instagram followers and out of that many people, it’s likely that there’s going to be someone interested in purchasing just about every piece.
Then we asked about shipping. She told us they don’t do shipping, items purchased over the phone need to be picked up in the store.
What an eye opener
Paul and I decided right then and there that we needed to put more effort into Soldier58's Instagram feed and it’s paid off for us, too. We have just under 600 followers – a measly number compared to Jinxed. However, with growing frequency, we find customers messaging us and calling us when they see something they like on our Instagram feed.
So, I want you to do 2 things in the next week.
First, take the time to visit the Instagram feed of Jinxed Philadelphia https://www.instagram.com/jinxedstore/?hl=en and take note of a few things:
Next, if you don't already have one, take a few moments to go to Instagram and sign up for an account. Next week we’ll talk more about using it effectively for your business.
